ACHIEVING YOUR LEVEL B – PART-TIME PROGRAM
WHY PEOPLE FAIL LANGUAGE TRAINING
No doubt you’ve heard about the problems with language training:
- After spending a long time in training and too much money, many people fail
- The training focuses on the end result, not on the learning process
- The material is not relevant to people’s professional environments
- The training focuses on the test, not on daily interaction
To achieve the Level B, many employees who are at a beginner level are sent away on full-time language training for several months. They cover material from the Canada School of Public Service that may not be relevant to their needs or their workplace environment. Those who pass their SLE at the B level often lose their skills shortly after their return to the workplace. Those who do not pass feel more and more demoralized as they try other options (private training, part-time courses) to meet the level required for their position.
In either case, employees have lost touch with a workplace that is in a greater and greater state of continuous flux. They return to their workplace after a prolonged absence with new duties and different personnel. They may have even missed out on opportunities that would have helped them advance in their careers. Their departments have also missed out on their expertise and knowledge at a time when their contributions would have been very valuable.
What’s the solution? Programs that are built on durable and sustainable training, just as all Knowledge Circle Second Language Programs are.
